Faye E. VanDeBerg

Faye Ellen VanDeBerg, daughter of George and Lola Perry Hoeger, was born August 6, 1926, in Fayette County, Iowa. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Waucoma and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church-Richfield of rural Sumner. She graduated from Alpha High School in 1943, and attended Wartburg College for one year. She moved to California and worked for a brief time at Lockheed Aircraft.

On April 14, 1945, she was united in marriage with Davey VanDeBerg at the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church in Burbank, California. The couple returned to the Alpha area following Davey’s discharge from the military, and partnered together in their farming operation for many years.

Following Davey’s death in June of 2007, Faye entered Stoney Brook Village in West Union, where she remained until entering the Good Samaritan Home in West Union in July of 2010. On Monday, February 27, 2012, her death occurred at Palmer Lutheran Health center in West Union from age related health problems. She was eighty-five years old and had been a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye where she had been active in the ladies circles and the church choir. She was a volunteer for the Fayette County Election Board and also was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #623 of Alpha and Waucoma. Faye enjoyed many years singing with the Hawkettes, a ladies barbershop quartet. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, baking, canning, gardening, but most of all, treasured the time spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Faye is survived by one son, David (Joanna) Van De Berg of Sumner; two daughters, Kathleen Hyman of Cedar Rapids and Denise (Greg Roecker) Reinig of Harlan; seven grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren; and two sisters, Elaine Pape of San Jose, California and Dorothy Walker of Paradise, California.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 2, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye with Rev. David R. Nelson officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 1, 2012, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Interment will follow at Alpha Cemetery.

Dear Kathy, Denise, David and families,

Our hearts are saddened at the loss of your dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. We had the privilege of visiting with her on her trips to Cedar Rapids, and know she was a very delightful lady.

Our hearts are gladdened that she is now in Heaven with her Husband and other loved ones. Always keep your memories of Faye in your hearts.

Much love, Margaret and Bob Doyle

All - I am so sorry to hear of Faye's passing. I'm glad that she was able to share a room with mom for the past year so that I could see her more as well as you folks, plus I expect there was comfort for both of them even though they could not communicate like the old days. She is a beautiful woman and will be missed.
